I'm Gonna be Totally Transparent, ...well, maybe just Translucent

Posted by

There's something about translucent powder coating colors that draw you in. Whether you call them translucent, candy, or tinted top coats, they have a depth and pop that makes you do a double take. My water bottle was sitting on my desk begging for some color. I grabbed the Candy Blue and brought it to life (tossed some black wrinkle on there too).

Versatility is also what I love about translucent powders. When applied over Bengal Silver or Bonded Chrome they will retain their great color. However, when you apply them over a base color like Sonny Orange or Gold Metallic you get some eye catching results and some great new colors as well.

Looking through the forums I love what's being done with rims, frames, tanks, bikes, valve covers, etc and the 2 coat process. I wanted to get in on the action so I took some of our MIT Copper and grabbed a few solid colors to come up with some great combinations. Each panel got a base of either Gold Metallic, Crimson Red, Sonny Orange, or Bengal Silver. I then did a partial cure, took the panel out to cool, sprayed the Copper Top Coat and then did a full cure. Here are the results:

Pictures truly don't do justice to seeing a finished part in person. I loved the results of each of these colors. With Bengal Silver the color remained consistent but it added the shimmer of the metallic. The Gold Metallic did the same while producing a darker copper color. The girls in the office say the Copper over Crimson Red reminds them of a candied apple (then we all got hungry). My favorite was the Copper over Sonny Orange. It produced a Glossy amber color that would be a great compliment to Sky White or High Gloss Black

I can't wait to try out more two coat color combinations with our other great MIT Candy/Translucent Powders. Have any of you created great new colors using Translucent Powders? If so we'd love to see your work. Share your comments and pictures in the section below.
